Foundational Perspectives of Organ Donation

The Alliance Foundational Perspectives of Organ Donation is an interactive self-paced course, developed and delivered by field experts, to broadly examine the comprehensive donation process for the multidisciplinary healthcare team – especially early-career critical care providers, residents, fellows, nurses, respiratory therapists, advanced clinicians and early-career OPO professionals.

This Learning Pathway introduces the clinical, legal and administrative considerations of organ donation, synergistic healthcare partnerships and patient family dynamics. It’s an ideal educational opportunity for clinicians and frontline healthcare team members, creating shared understanding of the complex and interconnected logistics of organ donation and bolstering effective practices in hospitals where donation occurs.

  • Describe the historic and present overview of the U.S. organ donation and transplantation system and discuss the legal and ethical considerations.
  • Identify basic characteristics of a potential donor and define the two potential pathways for deceased organ donation.
  • Explain both administrative and medical aspects involved in the donation process, such as determination of brain death, donation facilitation in special situations, and the physician role, intensivist and palliative care, in end-of-life care in the ICU.
  • Identify and describe the principles and goals of organ donor management.
  • Discuss the psychosocial and grief resource needs and identify principles of effective communication with a potential donor family.
  • Articulate and describe the factors and practices which contribute to a culture of donation in a hospital system and successful integration of best practices of organ donation into hospital processes, through collaboration between the hospital and organ procurement organization.
  • Describe how organ donation can benefit donors by honoring their wishes and have a positive impact on donor families and transplant recipients.
