The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance Awarded HRSA Cooperative Agreement

Philadelphia, PA (September 8, 2011)—The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance, a consortium of national organizations critical to the organ donation and transplantation process, has been awarded grant funding to support a 3-year Cooperative Agreement (CA) from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an operating division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  The CA—which will provide approximately $2.75 million in its first year and $2.9 million each in its optional second and third years—will enable the Alliance to continue the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy – based in the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice –  to increase organ donation and transplantation in the United States.

“The CA will allow us to plan and implement activities determined through a collaborative process with HRSA’s Division of Transplantation,” explained Alliance President Lori Brigham.  “This provides us with the opportunity to organize and facilitate another National Learning Congress in 2012, which aims to improve organ donation outcomes through the sharing of best practices with professionals and organizations involved in the organ donation process.”

“This is great news for the Alliance,” expressed Executive Director Helen Bottenfield.  “The CA will bring the necessary financial support to ensure the organizational, strategic, and programmatic growth that will enable our continued partnership with HRSA.  We are deeply grateful to the many board members and other Alliance sponsors and advocates who have supported the Alliance and its mission, and we look forward to continuing our work and program development under this new HRSA demonstration program.

Through the CA, the Alliance will plan and build programs in partnership with HRSA that will center on donation and transplantation performance improvement to build a body of science and information that will be used to save lives by increasing the number of organs available for transplantation.  The Alliance has been an integral part of the planning and implementation of programs and professional experiences to increase donation since 2006.

The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance is a consortium of national organizations critical to the organ donation and transplantation process whose main goal is to eliminate deaths on the national organ transplant wait list.  The Alliance, the result of a concentrated effort led by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, includes The American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Hospital Association, the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Joint Commission and the United Network for Organ Sharing.
