Closing Gaps: Understanding Belief Systems Beyond Widely Practiced Religions (Part I)

While many care resources aim for neutrality, neutrality alone does not guarantee that every family feels understood or supported during organ donation and end-of-life conversations. This webinar will explore how OPO professionals and hospital staff can provide more meaningful support for families whose beliefs fall outside commonly represented religious frameworks. Through the lens of unconscious bias, participants will be invited to move beyond the comfort of familiarity and toward a practice rooted in curiosity, humility, and affirming care — ensuring that every family, regardless of belief system, receives the meaning, intentional support they deserve.

Identify at least two under-resourced belief communities and explain why gaps in support exist for these populations in end-of-life care settings.

Explain differences between neutral and affirming care and apply unconscious bias frameworks to interrupt personal stigma when engaging with unfamiliar belief systems.

List local or community resources available to expand their knowledge of diverse belief systems and enhance their team’s ability to provide culturally responsive care.
Members of the donation and transplantation community serving diverse populations to include administrators, coordinators, physicians, nurses, surgeons, managers, quality improvement specialists, social workers, and other donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues.
