Single Center Approach to Ex-Situ Heart Perfusion and Utilization of Heart Devices: Organ Donor Selection Process and Key Considerations

The heart transplant team at Duke University will discuss their approach to perfusion/preservation utilization. Through use of case studies, they’ll walk participants through the selection process and key considerations discussed when determining the best method & device to utilize in specific cases.

  • Identify the various machine perfusion devices available for heart recovery and transplant.
  • Explain how one center determines the best method or device suited in specific donor and/or recipient cases.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how these decisions are made in real time, often discussed in the “middle of the night”.
