National Donor Sabbath

Observed annually in November, National Donor Sabbath is honored among major religions, donor families, transplant recipients, and professionals  within the donation and transplantation community.  This three-day observance takes place from Friday through Sunday in an effort to include the main days  of worship for practicing religions in the United  States. During National Donor Sabbath, faith leaders  from various religious backgrounds come together to educate the public about the critical need for life-saving organ and tissue donations given to others through transplantation. Collectively, they encourage people within their community to register their  decision to be organ, eye, and tissue donors.

As many people turn to their faith when faced with life and death, it’s important to note that all major  religions view donation as an act of compassion and  generosity. For more information about religious beliefs on donation, visit organdonor.gov/about/donors/religion.html.

How Can Your Faith Community Help Save Lives Through Donation?

  • Hold a viewing of The Wish – A Story of Faith, Hope and Generosity to inspire others to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.
  • Incorporate the “God, Each Day You Give is Precious” hymn in your church proceedings to encourage organ, eye and tissue donation.  Courtesy of Carolyn Winfree Gillette.
  • Partner with your local Organ Procurement  Organization (OPO) and invite a representative to host a table display and/or speak at events  involving your faith community.
  • Share your story about how donation and  transplantation has personally impacted your life.
  • Show your support through social networks like  Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter by using graphics provided by Donate Life America  (donatelife.net/nds)
