Dan Lebovitz was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. As an adolescent, he worked as a Camp Counselor at a camp for children with Diabetes, an experience that inspired him to pursue a career as a physician. While in medical school at Duke University, Lebovitz gravitated toward pediatrics, and during residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s, he developed a focus on treating the acutely ill child. Lebovitz practiced as a Pediatric Critical Care Physician for 36 years, retiring earlier this year. Lebovitz has been actively involved in organ donation for 30 years, serving as Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, or Consultant Medical Director for multiple Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) throughout that time. He currently serves as Chief Medical Officer of Donor Alliance, the OPO serving Colorado and most of Montana. Lebovitz’s current research focuses on organ donor and organ donation practices, with an emphasis on increasing donation rates — including the medical management of the neurologically deceased organ donor — to increase the number and improve the quality of organs available for transplantation. He brings a history of involvement in numerous local, regional, and national committees and organizations in this field, and has conducted and published research in this area.
