David Axelrod

Dr. Axelrod is clinical kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant surgeon and health services researcher. He directs NIH funded research evaluated the economic implications of organ failure.  I began my career at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality before developing and graduating as the first combined MD/MBA at Duke University.  I subsequently completed my general surgery residency with a two-year Robert Wood Johnson Health Services Research Fellowship at the University of Michigan. I am board certified in Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and have completed a fellowship in Abdominal Transplant Surgery. After my clinical transplant fellowship, I joined the faculty of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical center and The Dartmouth Institute for Healthcare Policy and Clinical Practice.  At Dartmouth, I was promoted to Associate Professor and Section Chief. I was recruited as Professor of Surgery with Tenure and Surgical Director of Kidney, Pancreas, and Live Donor transplant at the University of Iowa. I also served as the Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for Hospital Care. Recently, I joined University Hospitals in Cleveland as a System Medical Director, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Deputy Director of the Center for Health Service Research and have administrative responsibility for improving surgical quality and increasing cost efficiency across a the UH hospitals 10 hospitals
