Deepa Kurup was born in Madhya Pradesh, India in December of 1976. In 1999, she graduated with a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree. Soon after graduation she worked as a bedside nurse at a multispecialty hospital in India. In 2002, she got a job as a nursing instructor at a nursing college in Bangalore, India. While working in Bangalore, she explored the option to take the CGFNS/NCLEX exam to apply for a US visa. In 2003, she took the CGFNS exam and took a trip to Saipan to take the NCLEX exam. She started her immigration paperwork through an international nurse recruitment company where she was offered a job as the nurse support manager. During her 1.5-year tenure at the company she was awarded the Service Excellent Award (SEA). In August of 2005, Deepa received her Green Card and she immigrated to the United States. Her first job as a Registered Nurse was at VCU Medical Center Richmond, Virginia in the Acute Hemodialysis Department. She graduated with her dual Master’s in Nursing and Business Administration from University of Phoenix in 2009. She worked on several evidence-based practice projects and one such award-winning projects was the implementation of the music therapy for dialysis patients to help with anxiety and blood pressure management. She is also a proud recipient of DAISY award. In 2010, she took the role of Regulatory Specialist for solid organ transplant program and dialysis department where she successfully implemented a robust data driven quality program. In 2015 she moved to west coast and started her career at Stanford Healthcare about as a Quality Manager for organ transplant program. During her tenure she has received the CEO’s award for building and implementing the transplant quality structure in 6 months which lead to a successful CMS recertification survey for the organ transplant program. In 2018, she moved to San Diego and worked as the Quality Manager for solid organ transplant and VAD program. She has created a quality team of highly skilled professionals and build the quality structure for 6 organ program and the VAD program. She is LSSBB and CPHQ certified and her focus is on advancing healthcare quality through meaningful use of data to support improved decision-making and reducing variability in standard practice to improve quality and safety of patient care delivery system. She enjoys taking on complex quality and operational improvement projects and teach clinical staff process improvement to improve their day to day work efficiency. In April of 2024 she got promoted as the Director of Quality, Compliance and Operational Efficiency for organ transplant and VAD program. I am currently serving as the Sr. Director for the transplant program at UCSD. On her off days, she enjoys the beautiful hiking trails in San Diego. Deepa’s favorite quote is “Nothing will work unless you do” by Maya Angelou. Her Sagittarian personality trait: a strong desire for continuous learning, is what directed her to continue the work in the field of healthcare.
