Overview: Cultural insensitivity, or the act of prematurely judging an individual without full knowledge and understanding of their cultural background, is a common occurrence that tends to lead to unfavorable outcomes. Stereotypes and preconceived notions that we may have about a particular person, culture, or religion can significantly impact the way we engage and communicate with one another, especially in instances of death and grief—bearing in mind that we need to acknowledge what preconceived notions we may have when approaching sensitive conversations with patients and their families. This session will highlight common stereotypes concerning underserved communities and explore how those misconceptions impact healthcare.

These breakout discussions will serve as a value opportunity to connect with your peers in the community in small, collaborative groups and apply lessons learned from the general session. Following the breakout session, we will reconvene with our speakers to share key insights and strategies identified.
