Brief Bio

Emily Vail, MD, MSc is a physician-scientist dedicated to understanding health care delivery in the perioperative period. Her research uses clinical and administrative datasets to identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Vail’s past work focused on the epidemiology of medication use in critically ill patients and the factors associated with practice variation between hospitals. She is a member of the Columbia University Virginia Apgar Society and the UPenn Center for Perioperative Outcomes Research and Transformation. Dr. Vail received her MD degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She completed an anesthesia residency and critical care fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia. After clinical training, she completed an Apgar research fellowship at Columbia University and earned an MS in Patient-Oriented Research from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. A board-certified anesthesiologist and intensivist, Dr. Vail joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
