Ian Currie is a Consultant Surgeon in Transplantation and General Surgery. He performs liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation in Edinburgh, and recently stepped down as the Clinical Lead for the Abdominal Organ Retrieval Service in Scotland, a post he had held since 2010. In 2019, Mr Currie was appointed UK Clinical Lead for Organ Retrieval with NHS Blood and Transplant. In this latter role, Ian supports and directs organ retrieval in the UK, and is responsible for maintaining and developing the highly specialized teams of retrieval surgeons in Britain.
Mr Currie has a clinically focussed research portfolio centred on transplantation. He has developed collaborations with the Department of Performance Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. These studies are centred on the human factors involved in complex teams providing organ retrieval with novel technologies. In parallel, Mr Currie is developing techniques to assess functional capacity of liver grafts after transplant to support research in graft optimisation.
