What makes your career in organ donation and transplantation special?

A career in organ donation and transplantation is uniquely meaningful because it exists at the intersection of loss, hope, and life-saving impact. It is a field where every decision carries profound weight—supporting families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives while simultaneously helping to save and transform the lives of recipients.
What makes this work especially significant to me is the perspective I’ve gained from experiencing multiple sides of the process. From guiding families through the consent process to coordinating complex clinical operations, I’ve seen firsthand the compassion, precision, and collaboration required to make donation possible.
Today, my focus is on strengthening the partnerships and systems that connect transplant centers, hospitals, tissue and eye banks, and governmental partners. Using data-driven insights to improve organ utilization and maximize transplant outcomes is how I continue to honor donors and serve recipients—and that ability to turn collaboration into lives saved is what makes this career so meaningful to me.

Biography

Ismail Shamas, MBA, CPTC, CTBS, is a seasoned leader in organ donation and transplantation, bringing more than a decade of experience spanning clinical operations, donor management, and strategic partnership development. He currently serves as Manager of Business Partner Development at Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA).

Ismail began his career in 2012 as a Tissue Coordinator with South Texas Blood & Tissue before joining TOSA in 2015 as an Organ Recovery Coordinator, where he led complex, high-stakes donation cases across multiple regions, managed donor evaluation and surgical coordination, and supported families through the consent process with empathy and professionalism. In his current role, he strengthens collaboration with transplant centers, hospitals, tissue and eye banks, and governmental partners, using data-driven insights to improve organ utilization and maximize transplant outcomes. He holds a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management and maintains both CPTC and CTBS credentials, and has contributed to national presentations and abstracts at AOPO and the World Transplant Congress.

He was nominated for The Alliance 40 Under 40 by Dr. Philip Thomas, Medical Director at Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. Dr. Thomas highlighted how Ismail regularly aligns surgeons, physicians, and transplant coordinators with the mission of maximizing organ donation and utilization, works with medical examiners to facilitate recovery in complex medical-legal situations, and analyzes quality data to help partners maximize their performance.
