James V. Guarrera, MD, FACS is a Professor and Interim Chair of Surgery and Chief for the Division
of Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School. He graduated
from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in Surgery and Research
Fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in 2004 which was followed by fellowship training
in Multi-Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery also at Columbia. Dr. Guarrera is certified
by the American Board Surgery and The American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Prior to coming to
Rutgers, NJMS, Dr. Guarrera held key leadership positions as Surgical Director of Adult Liver
Transplantation and Program Director of the Abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Fellowship at
Columbia University Medical Center. He is a prolific academic researcher an extensive contributor to
the medical literature with over 100 scientific papers, reviews and book chapters and is on the
editorial board of the journal Liver Transplantation.
Dr. Guarrera is acknowledged as an international expert and pioneer in Ex-vivo Machine Preservation
of donor organs. He is distinguished as the first to clinically preserve human livers using ex-vivo
continuous machine perfusion. The techniques he developed paved the way for ex-vivo liver machine
perfusion procedures now being implemented in clinical trials by other groups in North America,
Europe, and Asia.
