Brief Bio

Jennifer Berumen, MD, is a surgeon specializing in abdominal transplantation and hepatobiliary (liver and bile duct) surgery. She performs kidney and liver transplants, and performs general surgery in transplant patients.

Dr. Berumen is also director of the living donor kidney transplant program and the surgical director of the pediatric kidney transplant program. at Rady Childrens Hospital. Her research focuses on kidney and liver transplantation in adults and children and has been published in a variety of journals including the American Journal of Transplantation and the Annals of Surgery. She is actively involved in organizations, including the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. She is the Alliance board of directors representative from the AST.

Dr. Berumen completed her two-year fellowship training in abdominal transplant surgery at Stanford University with a focus on pediatric liver and kidney transplantation, and her general surgery residency training at UC San Diego. She earned her medical degree and her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Tulane University, and was chosen as the Tulane School of Engineering Young Alumni of the Year in 2018.

I have been involved with the Alliance now for the past few years and have come to appreciate the depth of knowledge and resources they have to offer. They are there to help everyone involved in transplant, including the patients, providers, social workers, coordinators, and even just the general public who want to know more. There is so much they offer to the world of transplant un an understated way, and our transplant program has directly benefitted from being involved.
