Brief Bio

Dr. Scalea is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as well as a multi-organ transplant surgeon, researcher, and innovator. Beyond clinical care, Dr. Scalea is the CMO and co-founder of tech startups MediGO and MissionGO which both aim to improve access to transplant care. Dr. Scalea attended medical school at the University of Maryland and he studied Transplant Biology at Harvard University before completing his transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Scalea assumed the directorship of the kidney-pancreas program at the University of Maryland in 2016 and grew transplant volumes by 200% in just 12 months, while reducing patient morbidity. As of 2018 and ongoing, the University of Maryland has been the nation’s leader in combined kidneypancreas transplantation. In the laboratory, Dr. Scalea received international notoriety in 2019 for performing the first ever transplant of a human organ shipped by drone. He has published more than 65 peer reviewed scientific reports as well as articles of Transplant Bioethics in magazines including The Atlantic and Readers Digest. Dr. Scalea is a passionate surgeon and innovator who’s painting when he is not operating.
