Julia Foutz has worked in the UNOS Research Department since 2018. Julia is currently a Manager of Research Science, leading a multi-disciplinary team of biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and public health analysts in support of Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) contract work and other scientific inquiry studies. She also supports the OPTN Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplantation Committee, providing data analyses and interpretation to help guide transplant policy. Previous analytical support includes the OPTN Pediatric Transplantation Committee and the Collaborative Innovation and Improvement Network (COIIN). In future work, Julia’s support to the Liver Committee will focus on the transition to the continuous distribution framework as well as evaluating recent policy changes. Prior to coming to UNOS, Julia held several positions at Kaiser Family Foundation and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, where she received her master’s degree in public health in 2014.
In the past several years, efforts to address geographic disparities in access to transplantation through the implementation of acuity circles for liver and kidney allocation has changed the landscape of organ availability and distribution for transplant centers. This program will highlight the impact of the allocation changes on access to transplantation, waitlist and post-transplant outcomes, and organ utilization. Throughout the discussion, we will also highlight the challenges faced by transplant centers under the new allocation rules, and the adaptations that transplant centers have made to maximize efficiency and success in the current environment.
