What makes your career in organ donation and transplantation special?

My career in organ donation began in one of my first MPH classes, where organ donation was a topic as a Public Health issue. This three hour class opened my eyes to what would become a passion I did not know I had, as I was shocked that whether or not to donate, if possible, would ever be a question for anyone. After expressing this to my teacher, he immediately got me set-up to intern with LiveOnNY, and I have truly become fascinated with all aspects of the organ donation and transplantation process.

My career has continued to grow from OPO to a large hospital system with a transplant center, and I know that every extra hour, night, or weekend that I work is for the most incredible purpose, saving lives. I have worked on the OPO side for over five years, which has given me the ability to now work on the hospital end of this process with the OPO perspective in my mind. This has enabled me to solve problems before they arise, empathize with both teams during difficult cases, and create a stronger, more collaborative approach to increase referrals, authorizations and help our system save significantly more lives each year.
