Maria Baimas-George, MD, MPH, is an abdominal transplant surgeon at Atrium Health – Carolinas Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Wake Forest School of Medicine. She founded, authors, and illustrates The Strength of My Scars, a 40+ title, evidence-based patient-education series proven in randomized trials to improve comprehension, reduce anxiety, and lower unplanned healthcare utilization, work that earned her the 2024 IHA Health Literacy Award. Her clinical and research interests span liver and kidney transplantation (including NRP and machine perfusion), pediatric and adult living donation, and health-literacy interventions to advance equity and outcomes. She mentors trainees, reviews for multiple surgical and transplant journals, and regularly presents nationally on transplant innovation, visual communication in surgery, and patient-centered education.
