What makes your career in organ donation and transplantation special? My career in organ donation and transplantation is special because it blends compassion, education, and stewardship. It has allowed me to support people during their most vulnerable moments, champion strong transplant programs, and share the powerful story of organ donation with those who may not yet realize its impact. I feel I’ve gained a special perspective growing alongside patients, families, and transplant teams throughout the transplant journey.
I began my career as a pre-liver transplant coordinator, supporting patients and their loved ones during some of the most frightening and uncertain moments of their lives. Being present at that stage—when fear, hope, and uncertainty are at an all-time high—shaped how I approach my work and reinforced the significant responsibility that comes with transplantation.
As my career has evolved, I’ve been able to continue learning about the incredible gift of transplantation while supporting the teams who make it possible. Transitioning into a role focused on compliance, coinciding with both quality and education, has allowed me to guide and support multidisciplinary transplant professionals, knowing that my work directly impacts the safety, integrity, and experience of both patients and families.
Organ donation and transplantation are areas of healthcare that many people are unfamiliar with until they are personally affected. For that reason, it is especially meaningful to continue serving in this field and to educate others on the impact of transplantation and the generosity of organ donation.
Morgan Furtak, RN, BSN, is the Solid Organ Transplant Compliance Manager at Mayo Clinic Hospital–Minnesota, where she has spent nearly five years supporting high-performing transplant programs. She has contributed to the development of new transplant programs at the center, implemented a robust auditing cadence to ensure continuous survey readiness and regulatory compliance, and continues to guide her teams through the ever-changing regulatory landscape of transplantation.
Morgan began her transplant career nearly a decade ago as a pre-liver transplant RN care coordinator at Mayo Clinic, supporting patients and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives—an experience that continues to shape her patient-centered approach to leadership. She has served as an EPIC super user and credentialed trainer, helping guide transplant teams through significant workflow enhancements, and continues to partner closely with multidisciplinary teams to strengthen patient management processes and improve efficiency.
She was nominated for The Alliance 40 Under 40 by Katie McKee, Transplant Administrator at Mayo Clinic, with an additional nomination from Ali Manguso of Mayo Clinic Rochester. “What sets Morgan apart is her exceptional ability to ‘connect the dots,’ linking people, processes, regulatory requirements, and community partners in ways that unlock synergies, strengthen collaboration, and improve outcomes,” McKee wrote, calling her thoughtful leadership and precision the marks of a standout professional.
