Varun Kopparthy, PhD, is the Senior Vice President of Product Development at BMI OrganBank, where he leads product development, innovation, regulatory strategy, and clinical collaborations for next-generation organ preservation and transplantation technologies.
Dr. Kopparthy directs the commercialization and regulatory pathway for a portable OrganBank kidney preservation system, recently awarded FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, guiding its translation into clinical practice. In close collaboration with transplant surgeons, he is leading the development of advanced perfusion platforms engineered to preserve kidneys, livers, lungs, and whole eyes, and at the Cleveland Clinic he developed a platform preservation technology for vascular composite allografts. His work enhances preservation quality, extends viable preservation windows, and expands the number of organs that can be successfully transplanted.
A biomedical engineer by training, Dr. Kopparthy works at the intersection of engineering, research and development, and clinical translation, driven by a mission to challenge long-standing assumptions in transplantation and to ensure that no viable organ is ever wasted.
