Brief Bio

Dr. Greer received his MD and MA (English Literature) from the University of Florida, and then trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital in neurology, with specialized fellowship training in stroke and neurocritical care. His special interests include coma and disorders of consciousness, brain death, stroke, and neurocritical care. He has been Chairman of the Department of Neurology since 2017. Dr. Greer’s interests in neurocritical care include coma, neuroprognostication, brain death, and targeted temperature management in acute brain injury, as well as an interest in features that may predict outcome from coma and cardiac arrest, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, biomarkers and the clinical examination. He has studied the variability in brain death determination, with a goal of providing standardization in this field. He was the senior author on the 2010 AAN Practice Parameter Update on Brain Death Determination.
