We will solve the organ shortage problem in our lifetime. What happens then? How will our current system meet the shifting economics of organ supply and demand? The transplant community has built its policies and practices on the premise that there are not enough organs. The truth is more nuanced. We have an abundance of BTD (better than dialysis) organs — particularly kidneys — going unused. This breaks our implied promise to donor families — to honor their loved ones. We can do better.
