Adopting a Beginner’s Mindset: Embracing Uncertainty with Certainty
We will solve the organ shortage problem in our lifetime. What happens then? How will our current system meet the shifting economics of organ supply and demand? We cannot predict the future, but we can position ourselves toward a different trajectory by adopting a mindset that detaches from fixed knowns to anticipate new unknowns. It all begins with our perspective.
Paul Myoung, Senior Administrative Director for Massachusetts General Hospital discusses our most precious resource and rebooting to a beginner’s mindset.

What If We Had Too Many Organs? Actually, We Do!
The transplant community has built its policies and practices on the premise that there are not enough organs. The truth is more nuanced. We have an abundance of BTD (better than dialysis) organs — particularly kidneys — going unused. This breaks our implied promise to donor families — to honor their loved ones. We can do better.
Kevin Cmunt, Former Chief Executive Officer – Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, IL offers some suggestions.

The Transformative Power of Liver Perfusion Devices
Medical innovations are often criticized as providing incremental benefit in exchange for astronomical cost. However, occasionally an innovation comes along that completely transforms a field for the better. Liver perfusion devices need to be given the chance to prove if they indeed are this generation’s transformative change agent in transplantation.

The Case for Organ Data Transparency
We need to shine the light on perfusion device data to make the switch from a donor-centric to an organ-centric national system. If we work together now, we can reduce the wait list to zero in the future. If we don’t, we’ll have a system that hinders accessibility to game-changing innovations for the majority of patients.
