Dr. Schroder attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed both his general surgery and thoracic & cardiovascular surgery residencies at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He is now an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He is the surgical director of their Heart Transplantation program and the Co-director of their Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit. He is the Principal Site Investigator for the TransMedics sponsored Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Safety and Effectiveness of The Portable Organ Care System (OCS™) Heart for Resuscitation, Preservation and Assessment of Hearts From Donors After Circulatory Death (DCD Heart Trial) where they were the first transplant program in the US to utilize the TransMedics Organ Care System to perform a DCD Heart Transplant in December of 2019.
The heart transplant team at Duke University will discuss their approach to perfusion/preservation utilization. Through use of case studies, they’ll walk participants through the selection process and key considerations discussed when determining the best method & device to utilize in specific cases.
