The Future of Organ Transportation: Launching the Matador Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) Consortium

Presented on: Tuesday, July 11, 2023

In November 2022, three OPOs across the country joined forces with the Matador Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) Consortium to test the transportation of donated organs using an aerial system that was operated using robotic technology. The Optionally Piloted Aircraft (OPA), flown entirely by the technology onboard, transported a donated liver, kidney, and pancreas between three cities. Join us as we welcome the leadership teams from LifeGift, LifeShare, and Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA) as they discuss how the use of this groundbreaking technology can improve the transportation of donated organs and tissues in rural areas to better serve transplant patients.

  • Describe the current state of organ transportation in the US and discuss how UAS technology can minimize the time between organ recovery and transplantation.
  • Explain how UAS technology can increase the efficiency of the logistics involved in the testing of biological material to allocate organs and the recovery of donated organs.
  • Recognize how innovation and technology can help the OPO and transplant community better serve all patients, especially those located in rural areas.
