The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance (“The Alliance”) named Thomas (Tom) Mone as Chairman of the Board of Directors for a two-year term ending December 31, 2016. Mone has served on The Alliance Board of Directors since 2013 and has served for 15 years as CEO of OneLegacy, the largest Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) in the U.S.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Tom Mone to a leadership position in The Alliance after his many years of service to our community,” stated LeAnn Swanson, Executive Director. “Tom’s capabilities are well known and respected throughout the donation and transplantation arena. We hope his strategic and visionary management style will help to lead The Alliance to providing the community with forums and tools to improve performance and ultimately save more lives through donation and transplantation.”

“As proud as I am of what we have accomplished in California, I am even more excited with the opportunity that The Alliance gives us to collaborate with our national colleagues and stakeholders to identify, refine, and share best practies in organ donation and transplantation,” Mone commented. “I have witnessed the growth of The Alliance since its first meeting in Los Angeles in 2006, and I know that there is an opportunity for exponential growth as the healthcare industry continues its transformation. I am honored to chair this organization and to benefit from the remarkable medical and healthcare management expertise in our community.”

Mone joined OneLegacy in 2000 as CEO after serving as CEO and COO of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in the greater Los Angeles area. During his tenure at OneLegacy, which serves nearly 20 million people in Southern California, organ donation increased 60% in only five years, which enabled the agency to save more lives than any OPO in the nation and to establish a donation rate among the top 10 OPOs nationwide. Under Mone’s leadership, OneLegacy added tissue recovery services that benefit 100,000 patients from nearly 2,000 donors each year. He also introduced the nation’s first electronic donor record and web-based organ sharing and Nucleic Acid Testing for contagious diseases to make transplants safer and increase available organs for transplantation, both of which are now national standards of practice.

Additionally, Mone is a founding board member of the Donate Life California Organ & Tissue Donor Registry, the largest registry in the U.S. with 11.5 million registered donors. He served as a board member of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS; 2006-2008), which manages the transplant waitlists and has served as President of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO; 2006-2007).

Mone has been committed to collaboration and education for U.S. international donation and transplantation programs. He developed the world’s first dedicated Organ Donation Simulation Lab for training physicians, nurses, and technicians in the best clinical and behavioral practices, and he founded the Organ Donation Global Leadership Symposium that trains donation leaders from around the world.
